Regulation in the financial markets is very necessary – as it is for building and planning roads or for the standard of care in hospitals. But if regulation is applied in a way that does not take account of the potential consequences, then problems may arise that are far greater than those for which the regulation was intended to solve. We will look, very briefly, at this and at how the past can help us to understand the present – and very possibly the future. This Virtual Masterclass session is a short excerpt from a Master in Finance lecture series on ‘Historical perspectives from 6,000 BC to today’.
